I keep coming back to the point I heard Tim Garrett make below. So much of our politics is obsessed with illusions of control. The focus on immigration seems to me just one such thing.

#degrowth is probably not possible with intention at scale, but it’s what we need and all storms break eventually

…we argue about how best to affect the bit of inward migration that currently amounts to only 4% (I think) of the total. Which might change outcomes for a few thousand people, while everyday we create the conditions for a billion people to be on the move in years to come.

We throw £25 billion at Carbon Capture and Storage which over decades has amounted to a minuscule fraction of what we’re emitting.

Dishonesty about what we are doing is everywhere

…This is not me making the case for resignation. It’s about trying not to feed the bullshit.

It’s about being an epistemological tree https://mastodon.social/@urlyman/115083086646479651

…Instrumentalism is rendering us stupid.

The notion that the ideas and actions that have the most merit are those which have the greatest effect. Which presupposes *direct* cause and effect, in a world of complexity.

(Is ‘instrumentalism’ the right word? Let me know if there is a better one.)

We need to find our way back to being content with emergence

@urlyman 'Utilitarianism' or a variant thereof. Although, as a philosopher I quite like 'Instrumentalism', I don't think it's a clearly defined term that has enough recognition to be widely informative.

@urlyman sounds like a variant/aspect of "effective altruism"
