ROV SuBastian feed from Sept. 4, 2025. The scientist on the mic is talking (in Spanish) about how new species are named when in the background people start saying "Sunfish" and "Mola mola." The scientist says (translated, paraphrased) "Oh, what a beauty…I can't believe it, look, we have a beautiful moonfish putting on a show for us," and the ROV camera pans up to show a sunfish, in Spanish "pez luna" (moonfish), Mola mola. It is a large round laterally flattened fish with two big fins, one on its back and one on its belly. Everyone oohs and ahhs over the mola. "How impressive…enormous," the scientist says in pure awe as it swims near the camera. "The captain, pilots, everyone is like, 'Wow.' …What a marvel." She adds something about how they'd spotted it earlier on another camera.

this mysterious thing appeared on the way down. i was whispering "what the fuck" to myself over and over while it was on screen. they think it is some organism's eggs??

Feed from ROV SuBastian as it descends to the seafloor, at 1944m below sea level. A small white object floats into view. When the camera exposure is turned down, it's revealed to be a roughly egg-shaped agglomeration of small white spheres that looks a bit like a cluster of closed coral polyps, enclosed in a layer of transparent crystalline orbs-within-orbs. Then the camera exposure is turned up again and they let the object drift offscreen.

there's a sponge specialist on board who alerted them to this interesting carnivorous sponge. when SuBastian picked it up this was all I could think of

On a thin stalk—coral? a sort of polychaete?—being clutched in the ROV's claw is a soft white globe covered all over with long thin threads, a bit like a thistle. There is a tiny translucent nudibranch on top, like a little hat.

More seafloor finds:
- a lizardfish
- an ofiuro (brittle star) on coral
- an erizo (sea urchin), apparently Phormosoma placenta
- a glass bottle now home to several deep-sea organisms

A thin white stalk of coral covered with short little polyps. A pinkish-white brittle star (ofiuro) is clinging to the stalk for dear life, its long, thin limbs wrapping around the stem.

A purple-pink sea urchin that looks kind of like a dome covered with many thin threads standing straight up, and also on top a number of long bunny ear-like lobes.

Close-up of an old green glass bottle, dirty with sediment, clasped in SuBastian's claw. There are several corals or anemones growing on it, and perhaps a sponge on the bottom, and I think either brittle stars or gusanos (worms) of some kind.
