It turns out none of the recommendations in Germany were right and would have led me to lifelong disability in my nerves and also my knee.

@pedro I am so happy to have read in the last end you actually went to do surgery in Spain.
I believe that for this kind of injuries Spain and Italy as the best in Europe. Simply due to those countries being pinnacle of moto racing where such injuries are very common and they have oodles of experience treating them.

@pedro Thank you for writing this! My girlfriend, who has pain in her foot (not as serious as your case of course) had a similar experience with the doctors in Berlin. Some told her that she needs insoles, which didn‘t help at all. Others said to just „get used to live with the pain“ or „you aren‘t young, so what do you expect“. Absolute ego-crap everywhere with these doctors.

I‘m super glad you figured out a solution and that you persisted. It‘s sad that this is the state of the health system.

@kaiengelhardt I’m sorry to hear that. That story resonates a lot with what I experienced.
Was she able to figure out a solution?

@pedro Unfortunately no. Years ago she had a „prothesis“, like a specific piece of rubber that would go below her foot and between her toes, created in Spain, which perfectly made the pain go away.

That thing broke after 5 years of use, which is like 7 years ago. The doctor that made this prothesis retired and moved to Australia and we couldn‘t find a replacement since.

@pedro @obrhoff Thank you for sharing! Such an important topic - and something really needs to change. Glad to hear you are better and managed to find a way, but it’s not acceptable that it is necessary to be this complex. You make a lot of good points. I think part of the issue is also a lack of awareness of native Germans as we are used to the system and „letting nature heal“. My wife is from abroad as well and it’s started to change my trust in the system heavily as through her I’ve interacted more with the system and since she’s used to other treatment and questioning more.

@farnkraut @obrhoff it’s the second time I hear this. I know another couple where he was used to taking any response as valid one, but his partner insisted in how unnacceptable some answers were.
Nature healing makes sense in some cases, but using it as a tool too solve everything is covering a major issue in the system.

@pedro oh dear, I'm glad you were resourceful and persistent enough to seek advice elsewhere. Because yes, it sounds like otherwise you'd be disabled for life. What a shitshow.

@ctietze a complete shitshow indeed. Have you ever experienced issues with the health system in Germany? Part of me still wants to believe I was terribly unlucky, but it’s impossible.
