Most AI-driven AR for children casts them as consumers, not creators. That’s like being able to read but not write. How can we help them write with #AI and #AR? 🪄

In our #UIST2025 paper, we introduce Capybara, an authoring tool that empowers kids to build expressive, AI-enabled AR experiences.

Screen recording of Capybara, an AR authoring tool for kids. A child drags and drops colorful code blocks in AR to program interactions. A 3D character appears, customized with accessories generated from voice commands. The system automatically rigs the character, which then mirrors the child’s body movements using body tracking. Scenes show the character typing on a real keyboard and performing daily activities like workouts, blending virtual and physical worlds.

🧩 AR programming in the real world

Children drag & drop code blocks in AR to build visual programs, also to make characters interact with the physical world using object recognition.

🎨 Customization using GenAI

Kids can customize characters and accessories with speech-to-3D GenAI, integrated into the programming blocks.

🕺 Body-driven animation

Capybara auto-rigs 3D characters and lets kids bring them to life with their own body movements.

👧👦 What novel experiences have children created?

In studies with 20 kids (US + Argentina), we found they created:
1️⃣ realistic avatars for self representation
2️⃣ everyday stories (e.g., workouts, showers)
3️⃣ interactions with the real world (e.g., typing, dancing)

This is a first step toward our vision of fostering AI literacy and 3D computational thinking among the younger generation. The research was conducted during my postdoc at Princeton University with @andresmh and many amazing co-authors.
