Having done extensive genealogy research in the northeast US in this time frame, none of the evidence presented here means much. Lots of people didn’t have birth certs, marriage records, or church records in many communities in the 1870s and 80s. Lack of evidence means little. His mother may very well have made all of this up. But there is just as much reason to believe her. Self signed birth certificate weird. But not evidence about existence of his father. #mastodaoine

@relistan did you watch the TG4 show on Dev last week? We will watch this tonight too. Yes, you’ve a point but it’s generally possible to find something about who’s who even 150 years ago. I’m doing research into Aus family from 1780s. Traces of references exist for whites. Fewer for Aborigines. But de Valera was relatively wealthy? I’m guessing…

@lucyweirphd The article mentions the show and I will watch. Yeah I have some family records back to the 1640s. Some were kept very well. But no, de Valera’s mother was destitute. That’s about the most likely place to find no records. And many records don’t survive. I’ve not been able to trace one Irish family in Pennsylvania and New York further than about 1880. There are no more records. DNA is the best evidence these days to cross the broken links. His family could settle this definitively.

Not a fan of Dev personally but that situation had to be tough to grow up with.
