> Moving Radio New Zealand's "centre of gravity" to Auckland is an ill-considered strategy.

I had the same concerns based on my first impressions. But after listening to the interview with Paul Thompson on yesterday's edition of MediaWatch;

... it doesn't sound like the plan is for RNZ to become "Auckland-centric". Just to focus for a while on making sure it's serving the needs of (50+) radio listeners in Tamaki Makaurau.

> Christchurch? Tauranga? Dunedin? Nelson?

What about Palmerston North? Napier? New Plymouth? Whangarei? All of which are bigger than Nelson. Not to mention Hamilton, which is now our 4th biggest city by some measures, with roughly double the population of Dunedin.

I agree public media needs to be a voice for areas commercial media ignore. But based on stats from Wikipedia You have to add together the next 11 largest cities to top the population of Tamaki Makaurau, so ...

> Unlike television, radio can originate its broadcasts from anywhere with minimal expense

Both can do this. But with a broad range of quality in the outputs, depending on the recording gear used, the skills of the operators, and the suitability of the space for recording. See the difference between NewHub and Stuff's news on TV3. With all due respect to Stuff, I've seen better production values on YT-only "news" channels.

Recording shows broadcast live from a professional radio studio results in an audio file. Recording myself reading my blog posts in my bedroom also results in an audio file. But even though these 2 things can be functionally reduced to the same kind of technical artifact, that doesn't mean listening to them creates the same experience.

If it did, I could podcasting all my blog posts and get the same half a million listener numbers as RNZ does ; )
