This is a serious question. ICE has been doing checkpoints around DC, and one of the primary ways to protect against them is going up several blocks each way to warn people about them. But how do you pass the message to people in cars?

We're working on upping our sign game, but people won't always have signs with them. I stood at an intersection this morning with a hastily made, barely legible warning on a paper bag.

A widely understood hand sign could help with this.

@shauna Motorcyclists have a couple of signals we give to warn of police speed traps ahead. Flashing high beams, and / or a spinning sign with vertical index finger (to mimick a spinning police light).

I was driving in the UK recently and was surprised when my Google maps navigation warned me of police ahead and sure enough there they were. Presumably this is crowd sourced info, IDK if this also works in the US but it could be used to notify people of police (or ICE in this case but same difference) ahead?

Three brainstormed ideas.

Semaphore?
Yes, "no one knows it".
But folk in danger will be looking out for anomolies - like repeated weird arm-waving.

The #WazeApp. #Waze
It shows police drug-testing stops here. And roadworks.

Scuba divers use pointing with a fist as a danger signal.

Semaphore alphabet shown by 27 torso+head+arms figures.
27th figure is for "numbers" signal.
The signals for letters A through K function as number signals when preceeded by the "numbers" signal, I think.

@shauna I've heard some people are reporting "icy roads" in waze. Obviously that doesn't reach everyone though

What about having people carry a square of tinfoil - shiny (like “ice” and noticeable even without words written on.) Easily disposable and easy to hide (this square of tinfoil? It’s just trash from my lunch.) At night you could even shine a light on it to make it noticeable.

@shauna Reading signs from a moving car is tricky. The letters need to be large and have good contrast against their backing. It should be readable from 15 - 20' away.

(I say this as a yard sale queen).
