Freeing Apple Devices from Apple

Over the past year I’ve often come across folks talking about de-Googling which largely comes down to disconnecting from Google services by finding alternatives. When I began my transition away from Apple a few months back I wasn’t sure what I would do with my various Apple devices. I knew I wanted to switch to GNU/Linux on my 2012 Mac, but I would still have several devices that would be stuck with an #Apple OS...

@dennyhenke This is awesome. I’m hoping to get entirely onto gnu/linux over the next decade. But it’s tough with family who are hooked into the ecosystem already and who don’t care about privacy.

@GuyDudeman I know that feeling! It is such a strange thing that so many people have stopped caring about it. Or, maybe more accurately, have stopped thinking about it. I suspect that most that actually stop to consider it would find that they do care. My new strategy when faced with "I don't care" or "I have nothing to hide" is going to be: "Oh, really? Please unlock your phone and hand it to me. I'm going to have a look at all your texts and photos. I'll be sure to copy some of it too!"

@dennyhenke That’s a good idea. It’s just so much of “it’s way too late at this point” kind of philosophy. Like, even if we were to drop out of the system… would that mean that we wouldn’t count as “real” people because we no longer have a digital presence or fingerprint? The cat’s out of the bag, the toothpaste is out of the tube. It’s like we’re doomed to be serfs in this new world.

@GuyDudeman I think we have to push-back on all the things. Climate would be another example. It's too easy to say it's too late. I don't have children but I'll push back for other people's children. We have to stop ceding ground on these things because it CAN GET WORSE for THEM.

@dennyhenke I have set my iCloud email to forward all messages to my main account. No need to ever open my iCloud mail.

@dennyhenke As an experiment to see what you can do to disconnect your Macs from iCloud and other Apple services, you could create a new user account and simply refuse to activate every Apple related option. If that setup works for you, it’s easy to move your data to that new account
