Masks protect nearby people from germs the wearer may be spreading. So, yes, wear a mask as your duty to protect everybody around you and hope that they will do the same.

As far as I understood, wearing a mask in Japan is a mark of respect, if so kudos to them.

@pezmico Yeah, I don't get this. Even a simple cold brings many people to their knees, yet they're perfectly ok with a major systemic disease that wrecks their immune system four times a year causing them to catch things all over again, increases the chances of developing major conditions all around, etc etc just because most of the time they don't get very sick from it when they catch it?
