Google increasingly locks down its once-open mobile OS, and today took a major step in that bad direction.

If Google is going to be as control-freakish as Apple, AND continue to run a spyware-based mobile ecosystem, why not just buy an Iphone?

@dangillmor At this point I went the way of the iPhone because of the better quality hardware.

@dangillmor Why not ditch both Apple and Google and help support alternatives like #GrapheneOS or #SailfishOS?

They need support, users and funding. It'll come at the cost of some convenience (very little for GrapheneOS) but it'll grow these platforms and give them more leverage.

I just cannot wrap my head around how people think iOS and Google's Android are the only two viable daily drivers for mobile usage.

@dangillmor Your toot implies that Apple devices/products are not spying on you like Google products do. Yet, this is just great marketing from them that made people believe that. They collect tons of data on their users as has been shown many times in the past.

What Google is doing is wrong but it's playing into Apple's game to think (or make people believe) Apple is any better.
The only proper solution is to go with Open Source softwares

Maybe you want a phone with broken backup functionality? That's literally the only reason why you'd buy an Android then...

@dangillmor Apple's extreme control over what its users are allowed to do with their own devices is pretty much *the* reason I don't have an iPhone. It's also the reason I won't get a Samsung phone either. I will never buy a device I'm not allowed to install whatever software I want.

@dangillmor I'll just cling to my Fairphone with /e/OS.
