Last night I fell asleep listening to the latest episode of the Vergecast, which covered the #GooglePixel 10 phone & how it’s « AI stuffed ».

What did I dream about?

That I was browsing AI-generated photos on my phone. They seemed pointless and absurd (like: a mini car sitting on a car seat).

Then a white overlay appeared on screen, showing the energy consumption it took to generate the photos.

I remember screaming when I read « 100 liters » (22 gallons)… and then I woke up 😐

@_elena@mastodon.social My wife a few days ago "Do you want to change your phone soon? The Pixel 10 is out." (I've been a big Pixel fan, or should I say "used to be")

I look at the introduction of the phone on the Google shop: AI, AI, AI, AI, AI, AI.... ad nauseam.

Well. My next phone won't be a Pixel.

@_elena I'd suggest to watch the presentation by Serena Sensini at OSDay 2025.
She shows some interesting insights about AIs.

@_elena you can tell it was a dream because energy in measures in Joules or Watt-hour, gallons works be the water consumption mastolol

@oblomov I guess I was thinking of the cooling side of things for the data centers, not so much the electricity... with water becoming a scarcer resource 🥲

@_elena surely running @GrapheneOS on the Pixel 10 (once it's not vapourware and they support it) will wipe all that Google AI cruft.

PSA: if you own a Pixel and you're not running GrapheneOS, you should be.

@craige yes I think I had that dream because I've been eyeing a Pixel phone for a while, with the goal of installing @GrapheneOS on it. Hoping it indeed wipes all the AI "features"

@_elena @craige @GrapheneOS On GrapheneOS, all "AI features" are in applications you can chose to not install. By default, there is nothing AI on GrapheneOS.

@thomas wonderful to hear! thank you!

With the release of the Pixel 10, I'm hoping the price of the 9 will go down significantly... so I'm gonna wait a little longer to make the jump (I prefer its aesthetic over the 6, 7, 8)

To follow-up on my previous toot, knowing how anxious Gen Z and Gen Alpha are about the environmental catastrophe, I think that a lot of youngsters would think twice about using AI tools so frequently... if they knew about the energy consumption involved in their activities (esp. water to cool down data centers).

A text overlay guessing energy consumption for each prompt would be a game changer (as unrealistic as it sounds).

That's just me and my brain's nighttime activity 🥲

@_elena I got an older M1 macbook secondhand with 32GB of ram and am now able to run DeepSeek, chatGTP and other AIs on it without internet connection. With Ollama 😃 it can even work with 16GB ram..

@Gina not sure about that Gina - I’d rather look up villas to buy in Italy, Spain and Greece than worry about the environmental impact of AI 🥲

We could try to find providers caring about their ecological footprint. I know that up in Norway they run servers at 0 cost as they are powered and cooled by 100% sustainable energy. But how to find them? Mozilla started a program back in 2020, but I don't know what they achieved so far ( https://blog.mozilla.org/en/mozilla/mozillas-journey-to-environmental-sustainability/ ) I like duck.ai a lot. Hoping it is one of the better alternatives, but probably cheating myself...

@_elena I think water is not the main problem. Water cannot disapear from earth, so it's more a social problem (water being used for datacenter instead of for population) than environmental problem.

However, energy consumption and carbon footprint is more an issue.
Here is a serious (but not that accessible 😉) article about GPT4 carbon footprint: https://towardsdatascience.com/the-carbon-footprint-of-gpt-4-d6c676eb21ae/

@_elena I'm sure you've seen how Google published a paper downplaying the energy consumption of their median text AI response. This article discusses some interesting points on the analysis shared is biased at best: LinkedIn link, sorry, but found on fedi.
