"The cap Google, Facebook, X, Flipboard, Newsbreak, SmartNews, Yahoo, MSN, Reddit, and every other platform puts on independent publishers has crept lower and lower until there’s no space left for us to operate in."

I was nodding in sympathetic agreement as I read this post, until I reaches the paragraph where it says ...

"I’ll continue operating and creating new content on GFR’s YouTube channel. YouTube is a separate entity from Google and while our channel is young, it’s been incredibly successful. YouTube is a fantastic platform, one of the few that still rewards hard work and experience. I expect GIANT FREAKIN ROBOT’s YouTube presence to continue growing."

I literally yelled at my phone; have you learned nothing from your experience with corporate platforms?

@strypey was that before YouTube released the auto-GenAI-slop-remix engine?

@jrdepriest @strypey It was originally published last November, so I think so?

However, it looks like they're still publishing stories. Like this one soft-peddling a defense of Sidney Sweeney and the christofacsists. Or this one uncritically praising Tesla "Full" Self-Driving.

Their social links only point to Xitter, Facebook, and YouTube. So they learned nothing.

I'm not sure GFR no longer publishing stories would actually be a bad thing.

"Make sure you subscribe as soon as possible before the big media companies get to work on sabotaging it."

Ah, OK, you have. So why oh why did you pick YouTub, when you know it too will enshittify, and PeerTube is right there! It's like a kind of online Stockholm Syndrome.

@strypey Does PeerTube have an integral monetization system, even a terrible stingy one like YouTube has?

An answer I already have is, does spellcheck automatically capitalize peer tubes like it does YouTube, or does blithely split it into two words and(for some reason) change it from singular to plural? 👆

Not yet. For now you're stuck with micropatronage sites. But I've heard most YTers make more money via Patreon now than from YT itself.

Lack of payment support is a problem various fediverse projects are trying to solve, including WriteFreely and BandWagon.fm. Once they figure out something that works, hopefully they'll write it up as an FEP, so it can be added to PT and other apps.

@strypey It probably relates to why half the “liberal independent media” folks that got off the Xitter are only accessible here via bsky bridges.

At least with YouTube, there’s a basic monetization advantage. Sure YT is clawing back all the monetization it can, and raising thresholds except(so far) for the short TikTok emulations they’re pushing, but it’s “easy.”
