Do you remember the Google Earth project? They crowd sourced people building 3d renditions of existing buildings. Nearly every building in downtown San Francisco was done. You could zoom through the aerial alleys, it was amazingt.
There was a matching maps API, I toyed with it..... There was a brief moment when it was quite obvious it was possible -+ but disallowed by Google for reasons tl;dr here -- to build 3d buildings with web presence at random locations...,. But needed a street address.
So I spent some time finding exactly that: Thermal California. Along the salton sea, real estate scammers built all these streets for houses, I worked out hundreds of utterly unoccupied addresses on streets that existed, then...
Google dismantled the entire project. Its gone, no trace. Probably a million peoples volunteer work.
Google Earth was flat out the most amazing collection of software and data I could ever imaging. Seemingly flushed down the toilet. Or sold to law enforcement.
I think Google owned all the data and just disappeared it.
