To avoid circular swirls, the steel wool should be used in a sequence of vertical, horizontal, and diagonal strokes:

  • up, diagonal down to the right, up, down, diagonal up to the left, and down again (in a repeated 'N' pattern)
  • diagonal up to the right, diagonal down to the right, horizontal to the left, and repeat (like a stylized letter A)
  • horizontal to the right, diagonal down to the left, horizontal to the right, and reverse (in a repeating 'Z' pattern)
  • finish the sequence with continuous, uniform, up and down strokes (like a letter I)

This will produce a near-mirror finish, and everyone will notice your work.
