IIRC fraud in such matters is a federal crime.

So, amusing thing, I'm pretty sure (I am NOT a 1A lawyer!) this claim has actually shot herself in the foot, for -this- case. If he chooses to reply to this, then he might be in trouble if he were to say it again, but if he ignores it, he's probably in the clear.

No 'reckless disregard for the truth' (intent to mislead) or 'knowingly false', and Hunter can probably swear that neither applies. He had no reason to think the claim was false or even defamatory, he didn't originate it
