Dear #LazyWeb#AskFedi: is there a secret I-am-not-in-California option to " #docker compose build" to not time out if a build step involving software downloads takes too long (like >5min)? All the waterfowl-wending I have done indicates that this is a widely struck issue often but not always caused by broken DNS, but that at the bottom of the rabbit hole there is a hardcoded limit.

The error I am getting is "context deadline exceeeded" which occurs while my container build is (slowly) fetching a compiler tarball from a CPU vendor.

@Unixbigot docker was a mistake. I need to build that undockerify thing I’ve been thinking about - take a Dockerfile, build an environment inside a chroot or something

@jpm does 'docker container export' do enough of that for your needs?

@Unixbigot no idea. I kinda want an intermediate thing of “no fuck you I’m going to use my normal OS as the base, just give me all your assembly instructions to run manually”

@jpm @Unixbigot I think a core issue here is that when the docker base OS and your desktop OS don't match you need a way to translate all the commands from say pacman to flake.nix, which is a non trivial problem.
