@stshank It was because people went to Travel Agents, maybe at work maybe just in a strip mall. Their office supplies could be branded.
@stshank aviation merch was all the rage in the 90s. I still have some branded paper clip dispensers and rulers.
@stshank When I worked at the BBC I found highlighter pens in the stationery cupboard that were branded BBC. It turns out that this was a rudimentary attempt to stop you from stealing them.

@james That's so funny. When I think of pens with a brand name printed on them, I think of tchotchkes meant to be taken, not some attempt at theft deterrence.
