I wired my home for LAN some time ago, and the whole thing is driven by a big old 24pt 3com gigabit switch that I got off eBay for something $30. I opened it up and pulled the old loud fans out of it since my wiring space is in our rumpus room. It's never had a temperature problem and it's just chugging along passing bits around the house like a champ.
