In 1999, David Bowie starred in a 3D game about a hacker attacked by a demon in meatspace, who then escapes into the Omikron network. “An old legend recounts that only a nomad soul can hunt the demons out of Omikron,” he says in the introduction.

The music became his album 'hours...', but in retrospect the video game didn't quite match the likes of Everquest and Ultima Online for "human presence." https://cybercultural.com/p/bowie-1999-omikron/#InternetHistory#BowieForever

@ricmac I remember buying this when it came out and being mildly baffled by it, but somewhat intrigued too. The body-swapping mechanic was fascinating.

@ricmac still one of my favourite gaming experiences of all time, probably number 2 behind Homeworld.

Switching game modes (side scroll, FPS, over the shoulder), reincarnation and the unique real-world impact of killing an NPC by player choice sometimes..., the original music.

Yes, it was clunky, and the NPCs on the street didn't do much, and most buildings could be entered with zero reason to do so, but in terms of so-far-ahead-of-its-time brownie points? Nothing comes close IMO.

My "Featured Games" collection on Steam, including Omikron: Nomad Soul.

@jaz Good to hear! I never played Omikron (like Bowie, I’m not a gamer), but I love the music and resulting album, Hours.

@ricmac I remember walking into a pub in game and you just organically move through the crowd and then bam, it's a music video but you're in it and David Flippin' Bowie is singing.
