I got a new decoration for my home. (Well, I'll sneak it onto a pillar at work on Monday to see how many people notice, but once that little joke is over I'll be taking it home.) This is quite possibly the best $9 I ever spent!

As usual the alt text explains more and Mastodon users will have to click through to get to all the photos.

The box standing on my window sill in all its very red glory. While the box and the transparent plate are clearly injection-moulded, the notification plate ("IN EVENT OF A CAPITALIST CRISIS BREAK GLASS"), the hammer and sickle, and the red star are clearly 3D printed. This actually gives it a certain charm I quite enjoy. (I'm a sucker for cottage industries.)

The right side has an interesting threat about intellectual property. (Not very Marxist that!) It then has usual boring product descriptions and an admonition to read the instruction manual carefully before use.

It's a music box. What kind of instruction manual could you possibly need? (I genuinely don't know. I didn't read it.)

The rear of the box says it's 80% ABS, 20% other, with magnetic strength capable of supporting 400g and a 3-minute play time. It also has, again in Chinese, English, and Russian, two sayings:

"Ten thousand years are too long; seize the day, seize the hour."

"It is like the vast sea of stars, as long as we move forward bravely, we will eventually reach the other shore of our ideals.

The box design is done in bold diagonal stripes of red, yellow, and orange in visible conflict with each other.

The box it came in has communist slogans festooned over it. It's made to look like the contents, but on the front it says "Music box ornament" in Chinese and English near the top left, and where the "plate" would be it says, in Chinese, English, and Russian, "A single spark can start a prairie fire".

On a steel-clad door I've stuck the box, made to resemble one of those fire alarm or emergency door open boxes marked "smash glass in case of emergency". This particular box, however, is labelled in Chinese and English both IN EVENT OF A CAPITALIST CRISIS, BREAK GLASS. Under the "glass" (really just transparent plastic) is a 3D-printed hammer and sickle over top of a 3D-printed red star with a yellow outline.
