I love the idea of local governments having Fedi accounts. It sounds silly, but the idea of a bunch of local departments being able to get their messages out can actually be really useful. Think about how many municipal accounts post updates on Twitter to keep people informed about local events or developments.

@deadsuperhero I agree with the civic politics but is the #fedi software up to it? There's big problems with visibility and findability of posts on other servers. It seems to keep people in silos a bit. Or am I overstating it?

@deadsuperhero Completely agree. There is a petition and lobbying of every representative and agency in getting that achieved.

@deadsuperhero I like this idea of each municipal unit or org have own Fediverse-compatible servers and accounts from perspective of reliability - if centralized media fails, anything sitting there "dies" for time of outage.

@deadsuperhero@social.wedistribute.org as someone who doesn't use X/Twitter it is depressing how often I read news stories that begin with "as announced on X"...

@deadsuperhero@social.wedistribute.org
Every municipality should run their own Fedi server. For less than $10 a month any muni can stand up a #Sharkey server and branded to the city/ county/ town/ etc's branding, and granting accounts to each department/ elected official.

@gme I agree. I think the hard part is just developing a coherent strategy: establishing why municipalities should do this, helping them with setup and onboarding, training people and teams to use the thing, and maintenance.

@deadsuperhero@gme Myself and @andypiper have both written about this, there might be reusable nuggets in these articles:

@deadsuperhero@social.wedistribute.org
Well I'm retired now and have a lot of experience hosting and admin'g large Sharkey instances and I had a 30 year career in IT having to convey project goals and convince stakeholders at all levels why they should support an initiative.

My point?

Willing to help and/ or do something in this arena because this is something I could really get behind.

@deadsuperhero@social.wedistribute.org @gme@bofh.social I am thinking we can get a way in with local digital news orgs that are springing up to replace local papers that have shuttered.

Having a social media presence could be a logical next step! It also ticks the hyper local box.

@julian @deadsuperhero sometimes it's helpful to point to others who have blazed the trail and reassure people they are not first movers.

in case you need to refer to those who have already done this: https://jaz.co.uk/projects/orgs-using-ap/
