Farmer Dan, humoring me, let me harvest and pack 15 bunches of verdolagas (purslane) for market tomorrow. As healthy and luscious as they are, it will be a miracle if we sell any.

@marsiposa thanks for asking! We sold five 9 ounce bunches, maybe a few more will sell tomorrow at another farmers market. My purslane pesto samples were a big hit, and a fun way to tell people about farm club.

@Matt_Noyes that's great! I'm always surprised at how many things can be turned into pesto.

@Matt_Noyes I love purslane. If I was in the area I might buy it.

Then again I know how easy it is to forage for free. :D

@clayton people should definitely forage it, but the purslane grown in the tomato beds is big and juicy.

@Matt_Noyes when I used to have a plot at the community garden, a Mexican family was walking by one day, and they were so excited to see purslane growing all around as "weeds" in plots. I've never eaten it, though, and I still cannot recognize it on my own 🙈

@marsiposa I noticed today how differently we treat "crops" from "weeds." I used to pull purslane when weeding, now I pull thistles and grasses growing in the purslane. I harvest the best stems, with the biggest leaves, pulling the less successful plants. I treat the purslane more gently, too, taking care not to wound it. Same as I do the chard or turnips.

@marsiposa Right? It's easy to recognize, once you distinguish it from spurge, and the almost lemony flavor is very distinctive. Do you use PlantNet?

@Matt_Noyes I have not used PlantNet before, but I've installed it now and will give it a try!
