#Firefox users with older computers (at least 7-10 years old), if you have a minute could you check something for me? Go into about:support and scroll down to the "Codec Support Information" table. I'd like to know if it shows hardware decoding as being supported for the HEVC codec (it shouldn't). Also let me know what OS are you on.

@gabrielesvelto I have a MacBook Pro from 2013 around. It has no HEVC hardware decoding. Firefox agrees.
Windows 10: no HEVC support
macOS 11.7.10: only software decoding for HEVC
I updated Firefox before checking, version 141.0.

@gabrielesvelto My system is about 7 years old (bought in early 2018) and shows hardware decoding supported. Linux, Fedora 41, i7-8700K CPU using the CPU's onboard/integrated GPU (on a 4k HiDPI display). Hardware encoding is also listed as supported.

(I use an eccentric desktop without an X compositor, so maybe something is going on there.)

I remember that on windows if you have the hevc codec(the for oem one) then it'll say hw supported even if it's sw only on your hw. I'll double check later to confirm. Wait no that might've been for the av1 codec not the hevc. Or maybe both. I'll check to see

@gabrielesvelto Since my current pc does have h265 hw decoding I'd have to dig up my old pc to check.
But there are two things I can say for sure. First, on hardware that does have the hevc oem windows codec and has hw h265 decode, h265 shows up as hw decode supported but sw decode unsupported, which seems weird because I thought that windows codec also includes cpu decode in case there's no hw decode.

The second thing is that if you install the av1 codec from the ms store then av1 will show up as sw and hw decode supported whether you actually have av1 hw decode support or not.(I don't)

@gabrielesvelto well, it's a _weird_ one I'll admit to it.

this is a MacPro5,1 - so no later than 2013 when they were discontinued.

however, there is a Radeon RX6600 in it...

HEVC Supported for SW Decode, HW Decode, HW Encode per the codec table.

SW Encode is the only thing not supported.

Running Fedora 42, Firefox 141.0
