OK, Minio has decided to drop all the useful GUI features from the open-source (CE) version, making them exclusive to the paid version. More, they'll only provide "security fixes for severe issues" and no new features/development.

Personally, I prefer software that doesn't offer a certain feature at all, rather than one that, at some point, removes it and reserves it for "paying" customers.
It almost feels like a betrayal, in my eyes.

It's probably time to move the #BSDCafe media over to Garage or Seaweedfs.

@stefano seems to me that they think people will be so dependant of their software that the only way is to pay. A migration plan is usually cheaper 🤷‍♂️

@stefano this has been my disappointment with Bitnami retiring their Docker Images and Helm Charts and offering only those with a commercial support.

We are going all-in into closed source again

@stefano Absolutely, it’s really quite outrageous.

It’s more honest for a project to say from the start „this is commercial“ than to lure users in with open features and then cash in later. Blacklist material.

@tdr exactly. The good thing is that we have other options.

@stefano if you switch to Garage or SeaweedFS, let us know how it went :)

@thomas I've already performed some tests with both of them, some months ago. No problems so far, but didn't switch as Minio was working fine. The problem now is that Minio will just "maintain and provide fixes for severe security problems" that, in my eyes, means: we're considering to abandon the CE version.
It'll probably be garage - at least for now 🙂

@stefano @thomas
If the features remaining on CE and the update policy is "provide ALL fixes for security problems at the same time with paid version, and for severe non-security regressions when we consider it's worth providing to CE", it would be no problem. But...

@TomAoki @thomas I agree. But I see this as a first step towards the "we don't care about the CE version"
