What @laurenshof identifies here is that disgust with DataFarms is only one among many factors that leads to the growth of the fediverse and other decentralised networks. Yes, big scandals at DataFarms have lead to a number of big migration waves; at least 3 from Titter (including one in 2016), one from Tumblr, and one from Reddit. But these are like earthquakes, releasing pressure that's been building up for years beforehand.

Like earthquakes they break a lot of stuff. Admins, mods and volunteer helpdesk get overwhelmed. Some quit, which led to big services shutting down. Whole crops were lost ... er ... lots of people lost accounts, and some newbies may not have bothered to try again (this time).

But the breakages also reveal design weaknesses in the technical and social architectures of the fediverse. At the same time they're bringing in new tech and community developer. Leading to fresh approaches in both.
