Thinking out loud. What if Mastodon or ActivityPub adopted a "trusted connection" option and pair that with a default option to only allow trusted connections to direct mention you? Different use case than Roblox, and no need for ID verified, just a way to filter who can assault my notifications/DMs #trustcon

@jaz The either-or boolean model "connected or not" has always been a bad one. Social relationships are far more complex, and if we don't try to capture that online, then our online interactions will be unsatisfying.
Interestingly enough, I think that many commercial platforms, while they appear to do the same binary thing on the surface, have far more complex representations underneath, like a multidimensional vector of float. Which helps decide which post to surface to you.
@j12t that was Matt's (Kaufman) point, that while they (Roblox) do things in the background, this is a clear signal to the front end and to the end users that they can gradate their connections. Bonfire's Circles might do some of the fine grain, but a simple second tier like this could do a lot of heavy lifting for a lot of people.
@jaz @j12t that's super interesting to include as a new settings

There's now a new setting under "privacy" to decide the default active tab in the DM view (fig 1) and we've implemented filtering DMs by "followed only" (fig 2) as the lowest hanging fruit 🍓 .
DMs from people you don't follow are still received and saved - this is just UI filtering for now. And agree with what @j12t was pointing out, followers/following isn' really meaningful for classifying relationships or trust...
