@jaz @cyberleagle @ApAlun @derickr

I wonder if @cyberleagle, the author of one of the, if not the, most respected, authoritative texts on Internet regulation, might be considered to be at least a little clued up about this stuff :)

@neil @cyberleagle @ApAlun @derickr unquestionably.

Also, any insight from sitting with, talking to describing issues with, and generally getting in the face of the numerous Ofcom staff who spent the week at #TrustCon.

Both are good inputs. Don't ignore the regs. Don't have a heart attack about the regs. Somewhere is the middle ground that demonstrates good faith and meaningfully advances a safer Internet.

For the third time this #TrustCon I'm hearing the phrase "trust and safety is adversarial". There is no end state where it's "done". It is for this reason I strongly believe every platform needs to allow an admin to block harmful content, starting with text strings and URLs known to be used in spam and fraud campaigns.

Yes, it's not perfect.

Yes, it may be misused or abused by individual admins.

Yes, it's embarrassing we can't as a network share a signal and protect our hosted users.

A reminder from #TrustCon that moderators subjected to vicarious trauma often feel guilt or shame from "getting it wrong" - but that guilt is misplaced.

Guilt and shame
Forgive limitations
 * Bodily reaction
 * Sense of "responsibility" for the event
Dissipate shame
 * "... a trauma victim may adopt feelings of shame that rightfully belongs with someone else,
   one whose shamelessness allowed them to perpetrate trauma, or another who did not prevent a
   trauma when they possibly could have." (Rotschild & Bear, 2023, p. 169)
 * Whose shame?
 * Write, draw, dance, etc.
 * Share - use Mindful Gauge

Ireland, UK, Singapore, Australia online safety officials all in agreement that self-attestation of age is not appropriate, not effective, not compliant. #TrustCon

Heartening to hear Singapore's Edward Wee describe IMDA's approach to age verification is to require the app stores to do the age gating. #TrustCon

In a #TrustCon panel with Ireland's Coimisiún na Meán safety commissioner Niamh Hodnett - seems like the expectation for online platforms needing to provide age verification will be able to tap into the forthcoming DSA EU digital wallet tech as a "white label" means to comply with age assurance requirements. https://ec.europa.eu/digital-building-blocks/sites/display/EUDIGITALIDENTITYWALLET/EU+Digital+Identity+Wallet+Home

Thinking out loud. What if Mastodon or ActivityPub adopted a "trusted connection" option and pair that with a default option to only allow trusted connections to direct mention you? Different use case than Roblox, and no need for ID verified, just a way to filter who can assault my notifications/DMs #trustcon

#TrustCon keynote from Vinay @ #ROOST ended with this slide - context was countering the dangers of AI but four things every admin and moderator can take to heart.

Start preventative
Monitor broadly
Adapt fast
Collaborate extensively

That last one is especially close to my heart.

Feeling proud that three of my own projects made the big board at the opening of #trustcon talking about how the field has developed.

Slide at trustcon showing various projects about trust and safety including my podcast Ctrl alt speech, and my games trust and safety tycoon and moderator mayhem.

Kudos to @charlottewillner.bsky.social for her opening speech at #trustcon calling out how the US government is making the role of trust & safety more dangerous... And how many people couldn't even come to the event because it's not safe to travel to the US.
