Fun Ancient Computer Fact: In the days of punched card input to batch processing systems, decks of "IBM" cards could get very large. If a box of punched cards was dropped and scattered, getting them back into the proper order could be extremely time consuming. A common hack to help in this situation was to take a marker and draw a diagonal line across all the edges of the stacked cards. While this didn't provide a precise ordering, it could be used for a quick first sort, and then card sequence numbers (if present) could be used after that.
Sidenote: It was possible to punch ALL possible positions on an 80 column IBM card (yes, the reason standard terminal lines are 80 characters is because those cards were 80 characters). However, punching out all those positions made the card EXTREMELY flimsy. If it were fed into a high speed card input reader at a computer center, it was pretty much guaranteed to jam and cause significant hassles and delays for everyone else.
