Pretty cool, @slatian has made an open source search engine and it's running here: https://unobtanium.rocks/

Given how crappy other search engines have gotten, maybe it's worth giving a try!

@cwebber@slatian just tried it, asking for the longest Dark Star performed by the grateful dead in a live show. Produced nothing even close to a correct answer. The model was presumably not trained on #GratefulDead stuff. :-)

@DoctorDNS @cwebber

This is a search engine, not an LLM drgn_blep

The index configuration an inclusion criteria are over on codeberg. Feel free to open an issue if something is missing drgn_happy

@cwebber@slatian I tried it with a couple of searches. It reminded me of pre-Google search engines, where you just get a random selection of pages that contain the term.

@cwebber@slatian Looks like this still has a long way to go (for example, you can't filter by time range or anything like that -- I ran a quick test search and the first article I got was from 2008 which would be really bad if I was searching, say, how to fix a software issue) but it is a wonderful idea and I truly hope it takes off.

@cwebber I've wanted to replace my YaCy for a while. Been collecting open source search engines for a while now, this one goes to the top of the list.

It's in Rust, hosted on Codeberg. That already elevated it above pretty much every other option I wanted to explore.

Thanks Christine for tooting about it, and @slatian for writing it!

@algernon @cwebber

While the frontend works and is improving I still have some work to do on the backend, currently it’s pretty underdocumented and not very admin friendly unfortunately …

I’m open for helping and questions though.
