Dracula Daily, July 19: back to Seward & Renfield!

My friend has now a whole colony of sparrows…

Here's where I admit that this year a gaggle of house sparrows, on their own but so young their gapes (the corners of their mouth) were still yellow, began coming to my windowsill for the sunflower seeds I put out. I intended them for Fancy Birds like dark-eyed juncos, chickadees, and cardinals, and usually when squirrels or sparrows find them I make sure to leave the windowsill bare for several days until they forget or decide to go somewhere else. But the sparrows were so cute I allowed it.

(I initially started feeding the birds years ago as a way to entertain the cat but soon became interested in the birds for their own sake, and have kept it up since she died.)

Also, alternate version of today's entry (based on this meme).

@nev I'm not saying I'm above enjoying cute house sparrows, and I've fed them in the past, but I now recommend against feeding or housing house sparrows because they have a tendency to attack and kill native songbirds for nesting sites:

I employ a Sparrow-B-Gone to discourage them from my bird feeder:
