As of 845p, this ongoing story makes no mention yet of Trump's blackmail of CBS/Paramount/Ellison but includes generic hoo-ha about changing TV: a journalistic sin of omission. Trump is taking over media under the Times' nose and it turns away. https://www.nytimes.com/2025/07/17/business/stephen-colbert-late-show-ending.html?smid=tw-share

@jeffjarvis When does a newspaper lchoose to go on a war footing? (Or go maga?) Who at a newsroom decides that every story is a political story until enough democracy is restored?

The better Post story's 3rd graf:
"The announcement came days after Colbert spoke out against the $16 million paid earlier this month by Paramount, the parent company of CBS News, to settle a lawsuit" by Trump. Necessary journalistic context.

@jeffjarvis Yeah. Also has this for the sub-heading.

At 920p, The Times' story finally raised mealy-mouthed questions 10 paragraphs down. I smell mealy-mouthed editing.
The cancellation of Colbert is not an entertainment, culture, or business story. It is a political story, which is why The Times is screwing it up.

But the abrupt cancellation raised immediate questions about whether it was related to the impending merger with Skydance. A lawsuit by President Trump against Paramount that complicated the transaction was recently settled for $16 million. The F.C.C. review, however, has not yet been resolved.

Mr. Colbert, who has hosted “The Late Show” for a decade, has been a passionate critic of Mr. Trump, and recently called the company’s settlement with the president “a big fat bribe.”

It's about time Mr. Colbert went on his merry way and create his own online show for all to see... Free from sponsor or network pressure. Could be great!

The second graf of the AP story:
https://apnews.com/article/stephen-colbert-late-show-cbs-end-8bad9f16f076df62c0ffc50e9c8adbab

CBS is axing “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” in May 2026, the host told an audience at a taping Thursday.

The announcement came three days after Colbert spoke out against Paramount Global, parent company of CBS, settling with President Donald Trump over a “60 Minutes” story.

“I am offended,” Colbert said in his monologue Monday night. “I don’t know if anything — anything — will repair my trust in this company. But, just taking a stab at it, I’d say $16 million would help.”

He said the technical name in legal circles for the deal was “big fat bribe.”

This is precisely why they want it silenced:

"The most recent ratings from Nielsen show Colbert as winning his timeslot, with about 2.417 million viewers across 41 new episodes. It also said his late night show was the only one to gain viewers so far this year."
