I just randomly remembered a light novel/manga I read a few years ago called "The Magic in this Other World is Too Far Behind!". I think it also received an anime adaption. And after a fairly intriguing start it became miserable pretty quickly.
The main point of the series was that an innocent bystander transported to another world with his friends was deemed useless as a hero, but actually was a magician much more powerful than any of the people in the fantasy world.
