You could legitimately make a fortune by parking outside of the DMV in a van with an inkjet printer, charging $5/page to people trying to get REALIDs who've been told they need to produce a printout of yet another bill or bank statement for the clerk to glance at and then shred.

@pluralistic i let it go until the last minute. I renewed my passport and used those documents as a proof of address. I waited so long they began accepting almost any kind of official paperwork like my dog license renewal forms from the local police department. I had to create a dmv account to upload the dox just to get an appointment.

maryland made all of their IDs REALIDs like 15 years ago, after the law went into effect.
i dont remember doing anything special to get it, i just went and renewed my driver's license and it was REAL
i feel like any state that did not do this is run by morons.
@rustoleumlove @pluralistic To get a RealID in CA I first had to make an appointment at the Social Security Administration to request a re-print of my *physical social security card*, because I have literally never before in my life had to show that to anyone and last saw mine some time in the 1970s. It took two weeks to arrive.

@pluralistic maybe not a fortune, but people literally make a living that way in Mexico. I sorta had to do it for a new passport years ago. Also, more recently, I needed a printout for national ID correction and last week for something for our revenue office, bought a USB key from a.person outside so they could copy a digital certificate

That beats my idea for a 'Are You Psychic' test for $5, which consists of an envelope containing a slip of paper with a random 10 digit number. You use your psychic powers to determine the number and then write it on the envelope, after which you open the envelope and see if you got it right.
It's guaranteed to prove one way or the other if you are psychic!
@pluralistic I have privacy based reasons to not get a Real ID (people can call me paranoid all they want). However, I noticed that my experience trying to get a passport (brand new one, never gotten a passport before) was far easier than my attempt to humor getting a California Real ID based Drivers Liscense.
...and I say this as one of those people who has fallen between the cracks in bureaucracy before.
@pluralistic It's wild that when this happened to me at the (notoriously difficult!!) Chinese consulate, I had to get out of line, but they had an inkjet printer so my visa application went through. At the DMV, when I didn't have enough ridiculous documents, they just sent me home without a RealID and gave up.

I brought all the documents I thought I would need to renew my license and get a #RealID in the process.
Clerk looked at my current license, looked at my passport, and said "All set."
So my wife went to renew and brought her passport only, and had to come get a utility bill.
Somehow this was my fault. 😂

@pluralistic getting my realID in PA was quite literally the most Kafkaesque nightmare I have ever experienced.
It took six HOURS, AFTER we got triaged by the person at the door checking to make sure you had the right documents with you.
The person being served next to me was an Afghan translator who had been one of the few to have been granted asylum during the Afghanistan military withdrawal, and the poor clerk had to tell this poor man that he couldn't get a RealID.
Like, HEAVY SHIT, MAN.

When I moved the other year, I was required to get a new driver's license within 30 days. One of the valid forms of proof of address was a utility bill.
How I was supposed to move, set up a new utility account, and get a bill within 30 days was not explained.
@cptbutton @pluralistic I'm in more or less that situation now. I lost my wallet, and with it my driving licence, which was the only photo id I had which was valid for applying for... A replacement driving licence. As I live off grid, I also don't have a utility bill. So far I've been unable to find any form of photo id I can apply for without photo id or utility bills which is valid for applying for a driving licence.
Perhaps I no longer exist.
