馃憢 Hey #FOSS community! Need your wisdom on grant funding...

I've been developing a decentralized chat app that challenges the centralized model - think WhatsApp but with zero servers, complete privacy, and VR capabilities built right into the browser.

馃攳 What makes it different:
- Runs entirely in browser (JavaScript/PWA)
- Direct P2P connections via WebRTC
- Industry-grade encryption by default
- Experimental AR/VR shared spaces
- Users own 100% of their data

The project is open-source and functional, but needs funding to:
- Improve security auditing
- Expand mobile platform support
- Develop accessibility features
- Build developer documentation

Has anyone had success with grants for privacy-focused or decentralization projects? Especially interested in orgs that value user empowerment over profit.

@xoron

Definitely check out @ngi and @nlnet who have several programs you can apply for.

Then @sovtechfund and @PrototypeFund

I also maintain a curated list on funding for #FOSS, which has a HUGE backlog of resources to be added.. 馃槄

@smallcircles

are you able to advise about how i can go about hiring someone to do the application process for me?

maybe there is a better tone or communication style needed for this that im not doing.

ive tried doing it myself a few times, but it seems to have always been rejected.

the feedback i get leads me to think people like the concept... so i think it isnt entirely bad.

@xoron

Yes, tone and angle are important. Different programs value different scopes for the proposed work. At @nlnet they appreciate a very concrete chunk of R&D work that results in beneficial building blocks for the ecosystem when all milestones in the work plan are checked.

They are not just funding, but take roles in strategic advising of projects under their care, encourage collab.

There are also favored technology themes. Is your project blockchain-based or not may matter, for instance.

Thanks @smallcircles for mentioning us. Hi @xoron , just wanted to chime in about the application process. We hope it really is not necessary for you to hire someone to write your application. We have a really simple form. We hope it is composed in such a way that if you know what your project does and you know what work you are going to do, the form is easy to fill out. No need to say anything special or hit a certain tone or anything.
