Dear #permaculture & #nodig folk, how are y'all handling _the spreading_ of #woodchips during a #drought? Rather not and instead waiting for moister weather, or do you rather water them before spreading?

I'm wondering wether their insulating effect is a problem on soil that's dry to start with. The first few rains here seem to have barely moistened the top woodchip layer, but haven't reached the ground.

Seems like watering soil before spreading any cover seems best + then watering some more?

@gittaca Unless your soil is bone dry spreading wood chips (2cm - 4cm or more deep) will bring moisture up to the surface.

@carapace @gittaca Yes, it’s very likely there’s always moisture in the soil - it’s just being evaporated off the top layers more quickly at the moment. You can test this by laying a tarp over some ground in the heat and seeing if there’s any moisture under it after a few hours.

I would get spreading.
