Red Hat just expanded free access to RHEL for business developers https://www.zdnet.com/article/red-hat-expands-free-access-to-rhel-for-business-developers/ by @sjvn

If you're a programmer, there are lots of ways to get free Red Hat Enterprise #Linux instances for your work, and now there's another one.

@sjvn Or you can have #openSUSE which is truly free for everybody and the same binary packages (and more!) from #SLE.

@sjvn @jwildeboer is there any reason to go RHEL when you can just run Ubuntu instead?

@wenslauw @jwildeboer The technical arguments can, and do, go on forever. The short version is that some businesses like Red Hat's belt-and-suspenders support and security approach.

@sjvn I'm still hoping for a way to employ RHEL in academics.
We provide an AlmaLinux HPC-cluster to institute members, but still haven't found a way to properly license everything and we wouldn't (understandably) get 31k for RHEL self-supported.

@dbauer What licensing problems are you having with AlmaLinux?

@sjvn Ahh, my bad.
We have no licensing issues with Alma, but I'd like us to switch to RHEL (that we haven't found a way to license yet), just because some hardware drivers are weird sometimes which only comes up once every new moon when we update minor versions.
