@Tutanota @Mastodon @GrapheneOS @LineageOS

If anyone reading this has questions about installing either of these, I've installed both LineageOS and GrapheneOS on a couple different phones now. This one's running Lineage.

@Tutanota So at whart point would Gemini have been installed? It's not in my apps list. Am I just that far behind the times?
Android 12
Both phones tell me my software is up to date.

@Tutanota @Mastodon @GrapheneOS @LineageOS No, it isn't. Have no Google on my phone. Tone makes music. You are no musicians in your PR messages, are you?

@Tutanota @Mastodon @GrapheneOS @LineageOS

It's a real good thing you mention non-google OS's instead of just suggestion how to enable things (and keep on using it)

Non-corporate services are the HEALTHY future.

@Tutanota @pluralistic I’m sorry, I’m all for holding giant corporations accountable and raising red flags when necessary, but this feels like unhelpful and inaccurate fear mongering.

https://9to5google.com/2025/06/25/gemini-privacy-change-email/

Gemini isn’t about to start “scanning your phone.” If you use a Google phone running Google’s OS with Google apps and the Google “AI” assistant, then starting today you can use that AI assistant without having to turn on “Apps Activity.” That’s all.

@Tutanota @pluralistic enabling “Apps Activity” saves your interactions with Gemini and uses it to train their AI. You used to have to enable it to use the optional per-app integrations that would allow Gemini to access Google apps like Calendar or Messages so you could ask it things like, “what’s next on my calendar?” Now you can use those app integrations—if you want—without having to enable Apps Activity.

Or, you could just not use Gemini.

There is no new “scanning your phone” thing.

@cassidy @Tutanota @pluralistic

I don't mean to attack you personally but your position here is whitewashing Google's invasion of user privacy here.

Uploading people's WhatsApp conversations to Google's server without explicit user consent is unacceptable.

Are we supposed to trust Google with the content of our private conversations? Especially when they stealthily reach out to grab them. No.

@cassidy the post here is perhaps a bit sensationalist but the article itself seems accurate, as it doesn’t mention scanning, it’s written much more clearly and phrased as ‘access’. Not something I would want to opted into without understanding.

@Tutanota @Mastodon @GrapheneOS @LineageOS I deactivated Google Assistant on my smartphone and my tablet as soon as I got them, which appears to have stopped Gemini from getting activated.

@Tutanota @Mastodon no sign of this on stock android on Fairphone 5.

Wish I didn't need a Pixel to run @GrapheneOS otherwise I'd switch to GOS in a heartbeat.

Just wanted to specifically call out @e_mydata as another lovely deGoogled Android alternative. Their installation process was among the easiest in terms of technical skills required (i.e., no command line use required) and having @murena offer the OS preinstalled on phones is, in my opinion, a great way to get the less-technically inclined folks on board.

@Tutanota @Mastodon @GrapheneOS @LineageOS Even when not using dedicated OS for privacy, just disable/remove Google crap, including "Google" app. Disabling that one blocks so many evil Google stuff including their stupid assistants on any brand of phone.
