🚨 This is literally textbook Aryanization

- State violence causes economic distress
- The targeted group forced to sell assets
- Non-targeted people get a 'deal'
- Economic incentives align with persecution

We have seen this before.
It is happening NOW in the United States.

@continuation I see what you mean from an ethical perspective. I've used Google Lens for a couple of things myself though. Usually when word blindness hits hard which is happening more and more but like to avoid it if I can. When the energy runs low or I just can't accurately type I've used the microphone on the keyboard.
Does the ML accessibility gains justify the means? I think we have to ask someone visually impaired. It is impressive though. :/
@FourQ

I wish there was a company focused on ethics. OpenAI and Anthropic weren't as bad as Google and Meta, but now they're both military contractors. And none of them are dealing with the environmental costs.

Powerful and very useful tools if the people control them and they're made sustainable. But of course it's all about enriching billionaires instead.

@continuation there's about a million versions of this post knocking about but the real question is, assuming you are still able to, what's next in 2028? It's easy to shout fire but the difficult part is putting the fire out. Giving the entire list of fuckwits you have as politicians, what's stopping another asshole from trying it again in four years time? And it's not just facists, because there are plenty of looney left out there as well. 1)
@continuation it’s of eminent importance as a Jew in Antwerp explained to me, to keep realising that the prosecution of Jews had everything to do with robbery; with claiming ownership of things that were not yours. This robbery / financial aspect usually gets too little emphasis in the analysis of the events that led up to the holocaust.
@continuation Reminds me of exhibitions about plundering the Jewish people before they were deported in Hamburg, Germany
A lot of people were very excited to buy things for the cheap, even if it meant to exile or kill their neighbors.

@continuation this is evil, it's also stupid. The entire society gets poorer and less productive, services are cut, debt is added and almost of all of it so the rich can get richer, but you get a one time discount on some second hand stuff. Idiots. Good luck when it breaks down and there is no one to repair it and the parts are double the price because of tarrifs.
@kevinrns

Yes, on the evil site.

It's actually so widespread and mainstream, it's going all the way up to the government and trump's top advisors and all the politicians. So it's not a minority opinion but a massive fascist shift that is becoming fully normalized. It's all the silicon valley people, the 'race science' people, etc. All just embracing it without hesitation.

@Su_G

Yes, difficult because so much language that perfectly describes things happening in modern fascism comes from the most famous WWII example. For good reason but it makes it hard to talk about without people dismissing it. Gestapo, SS, concentration camp, etc. But I think personally we have to get over that because the very lesson of that period is how it was both absolutely horrifying and also unremarkable, because it only exposes something always there in our social/political systems.

@continuation

Yes… “absolutely horrifying and also unremarkable, because it only exposes something always there in our social/political systems.”

Last year I read the book Nazi Billionaires & was horrified
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nazi_Billionaires

Then I read Killers of the Flower Moon & couldn’t sleep for a week.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Killers_of_the_Flower_Moon_(book)

How did I get to be so dangerously naïve?

@scott

My honest answer considering all the events listed here: https://mas.to/@continuation/114809344400752194

I say this with full knowledge of how alarmist it sounds but I think the question to ask is this:

Knowing what you know about everything that happened after, what would you do if you were in Germany in 1933?

Do that, whatever it is.

Some can and will fight, others will need to leave. As the scholar of fascism said the lesson of 1933 is "get out sooner rather than later."

@continuation @scott Lots of people couldn’t leave then or now. IMO the real lesson of WWII is “people who participated in the Resistance survived at a far higher rate than those who peacefully cooperated with the authorities.”

Also there is nowhere you can move to avoid the policies of the USA gov’t. IMO it makes more sense to stay in the imperial core and cause problems, especially when the rise of fascism is evidence we’re closer to winning than ever—fascism is capitalism in decay.

@continuation My grandparents saw it firsthand. Their Japanese American neighbors were rounded up and sent to the camps. They lost everything. Their stores in Little Tokyo and Boyle Heights became white owned. And they couldn't get most of those businesses back when they returned home.

(Little Tokyo briefly became a Black neighborhood during the war when people migrated West from the South. Including the rest of my family.)

@continuation It's already happening. MacArthur Park was the latest example. People forget that it erupted in the 1992 citywide uprising and rebellion.

Just saw what happened last night on Crenshaw & Hyde Park near where we used to live. LAPD raided a public vigil for someone who was killed in yet another drive-by shooting. All hell broke loose.

I moved away in 2004. My brother moved in with me here in Albuquerque at the end of 2019.

We haven't forgotten 1992 either.

@continuation
It also happened in the Netherlands, houses and property abandoned by Jewish people were 'taken into custody' by neighbors. In some cities they were even confiscated by municipal governments (the Hague i. e.) while they were still living there (you're a renter now).
Some who were able to retrieve their home after returning from camps or hiding, had to pay taxes missed during the war and even fines on top (Amsterdam).

Thanks for explaining it so clearly, the economic benefits to the in-group (who can loot with impunity) of persecuting designated out-groups: “This creates a situation where people have an economic stake in the persecution. Just like Germans who bought Jewish businesses.”

Like the person in yr toot gleefully bragging about the benefits to the 2nd hand truck market of ICE persecution…

A horrifying situation, but look at the past: it worked for the Nazis… How to turn it around? Sugar in the tank…

@continuation I was seeing posts on Massachusetts Reddit where neighbors were photographing piles of stuff that landlords were putting on the curb after the tenants were snatched by ICE.

Good people were taking what they could to keep it safe in case the people came back, or if their neighbors family showed up to salvage important stuff. One guy was trying to get people to help keep his neighbor’s truck from being towed away until the family could pick it up.

Bad people were celebrating “free stuff” that was up for grabs.

The plan for ethnic cleansing in the US is coming from the very top down.

Three phases:

1. 'removing' undocumented people.

2. 'removing' legal migrants.

3. 'removing' citizens judged as "non assimilated".

"This July 4th weekend I want to give a big "THANK YOU" to the Heroic ICE Officers fighting every day to reclaim our Sovereignty and Freedom. One of the most exciting parts of the "ONE BIG BEAUTIFUL BILL ACT" is that it includes ALL of the Funding and Resources that ICE needs to carry out the Largest Mass Deportation Operation in History. Our Brave ICE Officers, who are under daily violent assault, will finally have the tools and support that they need. We will not let America become a Third World Country filled with Crime, failing Schools, collapsing Hospitals, and total Social Dysfunction. It's called "REMIGRATION" and, it will, MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!"
