Nigerien government has nationalized Somair, a subsidiary of French uranium company Orano as well as the Niger Electricity Company (Nigelec), responsible for electricity production, transmission, and distribution throughout the country.
Nigelec's nationalization aimed to improve electricity access and reduce dependence on Nigeria for power. The government's actions are seen as steps towards Niger's economic sovereignty.
