Information Is Beautiful

The world’s solar capacity reached 1,419 gigawatts in 2023, way beyond any predictions. 1 gigawatt = power for a medium sized city

A line chart plots global capacity of solar power measured in gigawatts. From 2010 capacity starts to grow exponentially, way beyond a series of predictions drawn as lines in yellow. Actual installations have been more than 3x higher than their five year forecasts.

@infobeautiful

It was predicted.

Just the IEA is a fossil fuel based organisation which cant or didn't want to predict solar taking share from fossil fuel.

People are making the connection between the fossil fuel industry and the loss of democracy, hopefully.

The switch to solar & wind means less money going to billionaires funding fascist movements.

@infobeautiful It's almost as if we had no predictors that take exponential trends into account.
When it's about GDP or stocks, business seems to have these readily available all the time...

@infobeautiful More solar energy is one thing that is necessary to slow down the inevitable decline of the Industrial Age, but right now we're still headed for rapid collapse rather than slow decline, and only ending fossil fuels now even if it damages the world economy can change our trajectory from rapid collapse to slow decline.
The Industrial Age will end one way or another because we missed our window for becoming sustainable by decades.
