I just bought two $55 ASUS RT-AX53U routers compatible with OpenWRT. I love how the OpenWRT hardware compatibility page (https://toh.openwrt.org/) has a link to detailed installation instructions for a particular router brand and model and even a forum link where it is discussed in some cases!

The discussion about the router I picked started in 2022. At first, you had to open the router and do some soldering. Over time, it evolved to checking a button to SSH into it to download the image directly on the device. https://forum.openwrt.org/t/openwrt-support-for-asus-rt-ax53u/124053
