I just found out my aging Android doesn't support 4G calling, and will be reduced to a small tablet when 2Degrees turn off 3G later this year;

Does anyone have a disused Android capable of VoLTE calling over 4G, which they'd be willing to donate to a struggling tech activist?

My Samsung S9 lost the ability to make and recieve calls and messages in Australia last September. Data still works fine.

Not sure about your Telco's in NZ, but here, they switched off the 3G system then and, for some unexplained reason, it took about 55,000 4G/VoLTE phones with it.

An awful lot were fairly recent Samsung's, like mine.

Its not a LineageOS problem, I'm still using it.

@strypey I've got the same phone. It is 4G capable. In order to use VoWifi (is that the same as VoLTE?) which I believe it can do, you have to use the OEM OS to do it first, and the suitable firmware or certs or whatever are installed. If you install LineageOS without having used VoWifi with the original ROM, it won't work. I didn't realise that before installing LineageOS on mine, and it's never worked (I even briefly reflashed it with the OEM ROM to get it working, but didn't seem to).

So it's not just about whether the firmware supports VoLTE, it's about whether you have the exact right settings and optimisations to make it work on the network you want to connect it to. I'm certainly not going to say you can't do VoLTE on LineageOS, but I am going to say that on a spectrum of "just works" to "holy shit that was epic" it's probably going to fall more towards the latter.
