"So of course spineless jellyfish Chris Hipkins doesn't want to. Oh, he agrees the punishment is "too extreme", but he says Labour is "pretty unlikely" to filibuster the debate. So, he's going to take the leverage the Speaker handed him to force the government to compromise and adopt a more appropriate penalty, and he's going to do... nothing."

Holy Christ-on-a-stick Chippy!?! It's never been clearer that this wet dish rag of an opposition leader needs to stop failing upwards, and resign.

If he doesn't want to fall on his sword, it's time for the Labour caucus to push him onto it. There *must* be a spine among them, whose owner could be a functional Leader of the Opposition.

PS: Upon further reading, I see Hipkins found the box he'd left his spine in;

https://norightturn.blogspot.com/2025/05/a-desperate-delay.html

Presumably after significant blowback on his initial, cowardly response to the proposed suspension of Māori party MPs.

But his first reflex tells you everything you need to know about his style of leadership; none. My comment stands. If he isn't replaced as Labour leader within the next few months, we'll most likely have to put up with another 3 years of NatACT First.

@strypey I'm glad he said what he did when the debate happened; but he needed to say it earlier as well, rather than trying to downplay his outrage.
