"Of note, galactose is mostly coming from dietary lactose breakdown by lactase enzyme. Thus, this upstream process is critical for galactose absorption efficiency. Individuals with lactase deficiency, for example, cannot absorb galactose and exhibit lactose intolerance due to its accumulation in the gut lumen."
