@hipsterelectron What are some alternatives for media preservation you would recommend? I have been uploading stuff I have done to the internet archive because I am not aware of other places that do this media preservation thing, but i agree centralization is and will always be a problem. We have known this since the Library of Alexandria.

@jectoons it is def the best place for media preservation i was more negative about its utility for stuff like preserving tweets or evidence of corporate criminality or war crimes and they avoid mentioning this when they talk about its use for "historical research" bc again they benefit financially (i'm not talking about profit) from being the One Source of Truth. i agree with you that centralization even for media is bad because the archive can't even defend that against lawsuits even though that's the one thing they will defend and not immediately take down
@jectoons if you own your own copyright it should be safe but in general they can't sue everyone at once and that's why unfortunately we need to develop the technical and logistical infrastructure to support a breadth of actual decentralization. i mentioned @OpenArchive elsewhere because i really like how they see themselves as a steward of and tech support for all the groups hosting uploaded content (which is often really radioactive stuff that the IA would never defend but is terribly necessary)
