PhDs really are tough but I don't think it is spoken about why. Yes you gotta work hard, I feel not as hard as many doing trades or those who have finished a PhD and are in the industry. The stress comes from the internal pressure. This is your project that defines you as a scientist at this point. It's scary. I'm struggling a lot.
