@randahl yesterday at FOSDEM there was a member of the European Parliament who was asked why so many politicians are still on X and her answer made total sense (sadly):

Politicians stay on X because journalists are still there, so they feel that if they leave they will become irrelevant / not be written about.

And journalists stay on X because politicians are there.

It’s a vicious cycle

@_elena @randahl This is why I think we need to adopt the "snowball" approach. We need to keep presuring politicians and journalists on why they are still on X. And we need to be prepared to being ignored a lot of the time. But occasionally we will succeed. In the Netherlands, for example, @volkskrant no longer posts on X and are working to #LoseTheXLink (still there but defunct). Every small success adds up, until we might one day reach a tipping point. Keep pushing.

@_elena @nopatience I second that.

A video addressing the nearly 60% of Members of the European Parliament still active on X would be beautiful.

What would happen if prominent politicians had official, active accounts on the Fediverse? Public attention would certainly follow, as would journalists, who are obligated to track and report on political figures.

People don't leave the Fediverse solely because of technical hurdles. Many arrive, look around, and simply don't find enough reasons to stay. Retention is not just a usability problem, but also a matter of social density and relevance. With a sufficiently large and visible group of active participants, the Fediverse could generate its own gravity and flourish beyond the tech-savvy community.

@everton137 @_elena @nopatience a week or so ago I checked the 14 Irish MEPs and found 7 of them on X. I sent them all an email to urge them to #LoseTheXLink and to consider Mastodon instead. NONE of them even bothered to respond, not even Luke Ming Flanagan who puts himself forward as a progressive candidate.

It's easy to ignore ONE email. What if they got thousands?

The green party of Ireland already made the move. Well done @greenparty_ie

Not the most important move in the world…. BUT it *is* significant when commercial companies also decide to leave X.

Next: all airlines using Amsterdam airport also saying 👋🏼 to X ??

@claesdevreese FANTASTIC

Are Schiphol Airport on Mastodon? It would be nice to give them props for their decision to #LoseTheXLink
