The European Commission has launched a public consultation to gather your views about the impact of data retention rules in view of adoption of legislative and non-legislative measures at EU level. Here's EDRi's guide on how to answer the tricky consultation.
The European Commission is putting together an "Expert Group for a Technology Roadmap on Encryption": https://ec.europa.eu/transparency/expert-groups-register/screen/expert-groups/consult?lang=en&groupID=4005
The group will include 12 members plus one member of ENISA (Cybersecurity Agency), EUROPOL (Police) and EDPS (Data protection Supervisor).
"The group shall be co-chaired by a representative of DG CNECT and a representative of DG HOME"
Applications are open until September 1st.
The Commission published its "Roadmap for law enforcement lawful access to data": https://home-affairs.ec.europa.eu/document/download/a29e61ce-7530-4bc3-91da-b448e70d468b_en?filename=Roadmap%20for%20effective%20and%20lawful%20access%20to%20data%20for%20law%20enforcement_en.pdf
This roadmap seems very important, I'd very much recommend to read it as a whole or at least skimming the key points!
Point IV notes (page 12) that "the Commission will support the research and development of
new decryption capacities".
By Q2 2026, a technology roadmap detailing what actions to take will be delivered.
