This is a nice application of #machinelearning in #magneticfusion: deep-learning event recognition for IR images at #Wendelstein7X by Polish colleagues from Politechnika Łódzka, with my small help. Our IR cameras produce more data than physicists can inspect frame by frame, so an AI now flags hot spots and tracks strike lines fast enough to protect the machine during shots.

This is an infrared image of the so‑called divertor during operation of Wendelstein 7-X. It shows, in pseudocolors (from dark blue through green, yellow, and orange to red), the surface temperature. Some pixels are marked as the events recognized by the algorithm.
