The Climate Needs FAIR and FOSS: A Sustainability Perspective on Research Data and Software Management
Joseph P. De Veaugh-Geiss1 und Daniela Mertzen
Abstract: We present an ecological perspective for IT and data governance strategies in academia through circular life cycle planning for digital objects. Information and Communication Technology has a carbon footprint on a par with the aviation industry, and it is growing. We argue that by implementing policies ensuring the re-use of data and code, research institutions enable digital objects — and, crucially, the hardware they are processed on — to be used more efficiently and for longer. In this way, FAIR and FOSS are not only beneficial for long-term accessibility and re-usability, but also ecological sustainability.
